Head bowed, the graceful guardian angel sweeping across footballer
David Beckham's back is a stunning sight. But there's one thing missing on the
foot-long figure, according to celebrity tattooist Louis Malloy - wings.
Louis worked hand-in-hand with Posh and Becks to come up with the angel's
unique Art Deco design. The original sported a fine set of feathery wings, but
minutes before Louis started the tattoo, David decided it would look too
cluttered and settled for a clipped angel with outstretching arms.
Louis, who owns Middleton Tattoo Studio in Manchester, started work on the
design in January. "David had come up with an idea and it was up to me to
put it down on paper. He wanted an angel figure pitched straight on at eye
level, stretching from shoulder to shoulder" says Louis, 36, who has
tattooed scores of other celebrities, as well as many of Beckham's Manchester
United team mates. Recently he did an ornamental dagger on All Saint Natalie
Appleton's back and tattooed "Stamina" on her actor-boyfriend Jonny
Lee Millers arm.
It took Louis two weeks to research the design, which looks remarkably
like Beckham with his new bald look, and then four hours to draw
it.
"Most angels are drawn from odd angles, so there wasn't much in the way of
reference material", explains Louis.
David wanted the tattoo to look almost like a figure diving, representing the
idea of free spirit", explains Louis. "He was very clear about not
wanting it to look like a figure on a crucifix. Its one of the reasons the angel
is bald, so it doesn't look like Jesus".
Luckily Beckham was thrilled with the result when he arrived at the studio to
have the tattoo done a few weeks later - complete with wife Victoria, baby
Brooklyn and the family bodyguard. "David took one look at it and said:
"Wicked!", I was really pleased", says Louis. "It's not
always easy to interpret someone else's idea and we'd got it spot on"
The tattoo itself took two hours to complete and Victoria stayed to watch, with
one eye on Becks and the other on Brooklyn.
THE GOTHIC BROOKLYN TATTOO
Showing the love for his son, David had his son's name, Brooklyn, carved onto
his lower back in gothic letters just below the guardian angel tattoo on his
shoulders.
The guardian angel was tattooed above the gothic Brooklyn tattoo to watch over
Brooklyn....
David Beckham had his wife's name emblazoned on his left forearm in Hindi
script.
It follows a tattoo of his son's name, Brooklyn, carved onto his lower back in
gothic letters and a guardian angel on his shoulders.
The new tattoo was first seen in public on Saturday when the couple attended a
birthday party for Victoria's sister, Louise, at a London club.
The star explains the origins of the tattoo in his new video, The Real David
Beckham, says The Mirror.
"I wanted a new tattoo for ages but we agreed it would look tacky if I had
Victoria just in English," he is reported as saying.
The newspaper quotes an Asian language expert, Avi Misra, who praised the
accuracy of the tattoo.
But the Daily Mail claims the Manish Tayal of the National Hindu Students' Forum
has criticised the calligraphy of Beckham's tattooist, spotting two
inaccuracies.
The tattoo is not a direct translation of Posh Spice's name - it does not exist
in Hindi - but instead breaks down the four distinct sounds of her name and
translates them into the Hindi language.
THE ROMAN VII TATTOO
David Beckham has had "VII" tattooed on his forearm, standing for his
favoured number 7 shirt.
Style expert Stephen Bayley says using Roman numerals, particularly when used in
the Times Roman typeface, does tend to lend a certain dignity. And that includes
Beckham.
"To use Roman numerals in clocks and watches does tend to say: 'I'm a bit
cleverer than you are.'
"By the intellectual standards of the locker room, Beckham is
certainly showing lofty ambitions. It's a statement of sophistication but, at
the same time, by having the tattoo on his inner arm, he is keeping quiet about
it.
"There's also an interesting tension between the two sorts of statements
he's making - the vulgarian taste for a tattoo and the relative sophistication
of its content.
THE GOTHIC ROMEO TATTOO
David Beckham has had the name of his second son Romeo tattooed on his back. And in a hint that he and wife Victoria may not yet have completed their family, he said there is still room for three, four or even five more names to be added.
THE WINGED CROSS TATTOO
Beckham flew tattooist Louis Malloy to Madrid from Manchester on Thursday,
May 20, 04 for the latest addition to his multi-million pound body.
